Standing on a Plinth

You know Anthony Gormley? You do! He did The Angel of The North and the Iron Man in Birmingham, among other things. Famous artist. Anyway, his latest work is called One & Other. It’s a curious work that I suspect I shall find myself dipping into from time to time over the next few months.

You know the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square? The one that gets occupied by a succession of changing artworks. Like that horrible abstract coloured glass thing, and that disabled woman, that were there a few years ago. It’s there.

From today until the 14th of October 2009, a different person will occupy that space atop the plinth. They get an hour each, and this will continue 24 hours a day. That’s 2,400 people.

Several cameras and microphones are trained on the spot. Here is a live stream:
